Why does my Disc drive/dvd rom keep on spinning?

Hello, I have a macbook pro 2009, and for some reason the disc drive/dvd rom spins continually slowing down my computer because its trying to read a disc even if there is no disc. When I put a disc in the computer you can hear the disc rubbing against the computer. Any ideas why this is happening? Any suggestions about what I should do? Thanks.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

It sounds like either there has been some sort of warping, or you have debris in the unit that is causing the drive to think it has a disc in it.

When you put a disc in it (I suggest a blank to avoid damage to the disc), can you eject it easily or is there resistance?

well, I don't hear it rubbing anymore but when I put the disc in, it automatically ejects about 30 seconds later

Do you have a disc cleaning kit? It's basically a CD with brushes and cleaner that you can run through the player. I'd bet your current issue is the laser lense needs to be cleaned. If you don't have one handy you can pick one up from most tech stores for like $15 (staples and likely even Walmart depending on where you live).
