ps3 turns on but only sends colored lines to tv

hello my playstation will turn on but it only sends colored bars to the tv. i had it hooked up through hdmi and thought my cable was bad so i switched to the original cables and it does the same thing with both types of cables. could anyone tell me what the problem is? and possibly how to fix it?
