Should I have my screen replaced or is there anything I can try before I take it to a repair shop? My computer powers on but the screen is black (off). The white lights above the scroll button & the caps lock button blink, but that's all that happens.

It could be a problem with static discharge , if so do the following.
1. Disconnect the power cord
2. Remove the battery
3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds , then release for 30 sec and then hold down for another 30sec
4. Plug in power ,replace battery and power on laptop.
If this causes no Joy try this.
Remove memory and reinstall one stick at a time, if there are more than 1 dimm of ram, try each stick in each slot one at a time to see if the memory is ok and to determine if one of the memory slots is bad.
You can also try hooking up to an external monitor see if it will work from there

mamastic, connect an external monitor first. If that displays anything, you will most likely need to replace the LCD.(depends on what you see) If it does not, chances are there are other issues than your LCD display. Could be a BIOS issue as well as a boot issue. Let us know what you find.
