Do I need thermal paste to clean my air filter?

I have a Asus G56JK-CNO64H laptop (came out in 2013, bought it in late 2014) and i am considering to clean the air filter since it keeps overheating when i'm playing certain games. But my question is, do i need thermal paste to do it? Some guides tells you to use it, while others don't. Is it really necessary?

A 2013 machine does not need new thermal paste. Blow out the fans.

It is ALWAYS good idea to use Thermal paste whenever cooling system touches cooling object - in your case probably processor. Thermal paste just help your cooling body to transfer temperature more efficiently.
