Chime at start then white/grey screen hangs...

So it won't go past the white/grey screen. Doesn't respond to the usual TS commands. Could it be hanging on a bad startup sequence command (like bad optical drive check)?

Please tell us which iMac you have. The information is on the bottom of your stand.

Try starting up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding the "C" key down on start up. Go to the second screen pull down menu and go to Utilities -> Disk Utility and try to repair the hard drive.

UPDATE

Try starting in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift Key. Hook it up to another Mac via firewire and try starting in Target mode by holding down the "T" key. Reseat the RAM one chip at a time.

Tried that, the disc loads and the drive spins up but it's not being read/recognized. Stuck on grey/white screen on all start up key combos; P ram, select disc, etc.
