After taking apart and cleaning my ps4, replacing the optical drive and the cables, my ps4 now accepts discs, it makes the reading noise, but then nothing appears in the PS4 menu, also if I go onto the game's tile, it comes up with 'no disc inserted'
Can anyone help me with this or give me some info.

I would first carefully check that the large ribbon cable is inserted correctly both in the connector on the motherboard as well as the connector on the disc drive board.
Also, I'm not sure where you got your replacement optical drive but it's very possible that it is bad. It may have a bad laser or some other part. You might consider putting your old drive back in...assuming that it still works.
These are the first two things I would suspect.

Well my old drive doesn't work either, so you would you recommend buying a new laser?
OK...well if your old one doesn't work then that changes things. That means that either both of the drives are bad (definitely possible) or there is some problem on either the disc drive board or the motherboard. Those would be the only two things that are common between the two drives.
So is there any way to fix that or do I have send it off to get repaired?
There isn't a good way for me to know how hard the fix for this is since I can't see it. There probably is a way to fix it but I just can't know without having it in my shop to look at it.
Would it be worth getting a new laser and fitting it?

Get a can of keyboard cleaner do light bursts of air if that does not work replace your sensor.
