Grey screen turns blue then nothing

Turn MBP on apple & rotating wheel appear screen then goes grey after short while screen goes blue after short while screen goes grey and pointer appears again after short while screen goes blue pointer remains on screen and is responsive to tracking pad. No further action by MBP have tried PRAM & SMC resets no response from MBP.

However when powering up MBP and holding down alt/options button picture of hard drive appears on screen with words Macintosh HD and arrow in circle beneath but this is not responsive to any commands.

Can you help.

This is most likely a hard drive issues or a combination of hard drive and hard drive/IR cable issue. You'll need to boot from an external source. Target mode will work if you have another Mac. It's process of elimination. If you have the original installation disk try booting from it. That failing, disconnect the hard drive cable from the logic board and boot from the DVD.
