Why is my screen showing half colour and half black & white?
a third of the screen seems to have perfect colour whilst the rest of it is greyscale

Sounds like you have a damaged display. Something heavy sat on the lid or banged it damaging the LCD. Depending on your exact model it could be around $300 US.

That's like 600 AUD, he should just buy a new macbook.
@Zach luck - Sadly, unless you post it in your Q there is no way to know what country one is from. So being in Australia the cost maybe prohibitive, in other countries it may not. The OP has to make that judgement only we can do is make note of the cost.
