no audio from speakers - optical digital output stuck on?

problem number 2 of the day

a couple of weeks ago my speakers stopped working entirely except on the startup chime..so i know they do still actually work.

with headphones in - the output works

without headphones plugged the optical out is definitely shooting optical signal out (red laser light) but can't choose anything but in system prefs.

what gives??
