Continues to restart, and will not reboot

I have a early 2014, 13" MacBook air. No problems previously, when I went to turn it on this am the apple icon shows up gets just a short ways into reboot and then a straight horizontal line comes across screen and it starts all over again and continues to do this over and over and over. Help

I actually had to do command and R to get to the disk utilities and then was able to repair it. Thanks

Options

Boot up in repair mode by holding down the option key on start up, select the repair disk, then run Disk Utilities.
