upgrading RAM from 4GB to 8GB

Mac Laptop a late 2008 15" macbook pro

my mistake was assuming I could just add a 4 GB chip to my memory and so I ordered only one ( you sent me a PC3-8500 4 GB )……I'm starting to thing that I might have to have another before I begin. Right?

Do I need to install 2 new 4GB chips to upgrade my laptop to 8GB RAM

or can I just add a new 4GB chip to the original 4GB?
