Options

Replaced PSU, iMac 21.5" ENC 2428 still dead.

We lost power after a lightning strike and the IMAC failed to respond at all once power was restored. The unit and other devices were on a surge protector. (I have a UPS ready now) The IMAC is the only one with an issue. I just installed a new PSU from IFIXIT but got the same result, no response at all. Please recommend next steps. If nothing else, our goal is to recover the family pictures on the IMAC. (we were utilizing time machine to an external HD but have no means to check it a this time).

Options

I have some good news and some bad news here:

The good news it you can access your pictures on the TimeMachine backup off of another Mac (even a Windows PC with some added software). Without having to do a backup restore.

The bad news here is its sounds like your logic board also got hit. But before we jump to that its possible you got a bad part as well. Do you have a DVM and know how to use it? I would do some probing on the PSU to see if I pickup the input and output voltages.

One option here is to see if you can find a used iMac which might be a cheaper option (I've seen some '11 27" iMacs going for less than a grand)

Thank you for the advice and options. I do have a DVM, so far i only checked the power cord to ensure power was making in to the case. I will check the input / outputs as you suggested on the PSU. Besides unnecessary worry, i have no reason not to believe the time machine will contain my data, however can data also be retrieved from the dead IMAC if needed. I'll report my findings on the PSU

Yes, you can, all you need to do is remove the HD and using a SATA to USB adapter like this one: Universal Drive Adapter connect it to your new system.

Checked both the new and old PSU's with DVM. 120v on the input and 12v on the output. Same readings exactly for both PSU units. I left the original in the machine. Of the 4 LED lights only the first is lit and nothing changed there when I pressed the power button. Does this info point to the logic board other issue? Can the board go bad with the PSU remaining in working order. Thanks again Joe

Lightning can do strange things! Its possible it burnt the logic board as you had other devices plugged in that the lightning used as the path into your system (Network or Printer being the most likely). Here's the diagnostic LED info: Technique: iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Diagnostic LED's jump down to Step 7.
