Why is my mac not finishing its startup?

My mid 2012 macbook will start but not finish its startup. Apple hardware test finds nothing wrong, I've tried SMA and PRAM resets, disc repair finds nothing wrong, and safe boot doesn't solve the problem. I've wiped and reinstalled the OS successfully, but when I go to restart it goes to a gray screen with the do not enter sign. Note: I replaced the hard drive a few weeks ago and it worked fine until yesterday.

What is the do not enter sign?

by

The circle with a slash through it, suggesting it can't find a startup drive.

I've replaced the hard drive twice now. The first one (an old non-SS) was clicking. Then the SS was diagnosed by some off-brand genius bar as being faulty. If it was the cable, that wouldn't explain the clicking, right?

A bad HD/IR cable can destroy the hard drive. Yes, clicking (which you did not mention before) is a good indicator of a failed drive. I'm an off brand genius because I won't pay Apple for their crappy certification. Do a search and check out the guys recommendations.
