2004 Pontiac Grand Prix - cannot compress rear piston on brakes

the piston has to go back in to return them to the car with new pads I do not think they are compressed back in because I have tried Do I need a tool to turn them back in manually

You need a tool to rotate the piston, should be able to get by with one of the cheapo cube ones like this:
