I have mint A1212 17inch MacBook Pro. It is not capable to update to El Capitan.
I also have a beat up A1229 that has El Capitan on it.
Can I put a A1229 Logic Board in a A1212?
Then I could upgrade to El Capitan.

No you have LED screen in A1229 and LCD in 1212 .

To correct John's answer here: The backlight in your older unit uses CFL's and your newer unit uses LED's. The circuitry which drives these different light sources is very different. Sadly, you can't swap the logic boards between then systems. In any case both are LCD displays.
