Can't initialize SSD after swapping HDD

Hi everybody!

The HDD of my early 2008 iMac died and I swapped it with a Samsung 850 EVO Basic SSD which I built in with an ICY DOCK Converter (2.5" to 3.5" SAS / SATA 22pin HDD & SSD Converter, MB982SP-1S).

When I boot from an external HDD with El Capitan on it and run the disk utility, the new SSD shows up, but I can't initialize it or do anything else with it.

Any ideas what could be the cause?

Thanks...

You need to delete the current partition & reformat the drive as it's currently setup for Windows.

Sadly, Disk Utility within El Capitan is harder to use (and less useful) than the older version. See if you can get a bootable Mavericks or Yosemite drive to use Disk Utility under it.

You want to setup the drive as GUID and create a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition.
