Why is there a loud pop while going over speed bumps?

Whenever I drive over a speed bump, or go over a pothole the car makes a loud scraping pop. The sound occurs no matter what speed the bump is hit at, but does it marginally better when going over the bump diagonally. What could be causing this problem and does it need to be replaced?

Check the steering linkage under the front of the car between the tires, especially your idler arm. If anything is loose-fitting, try to fix it or replace altogether if it's beyond repair.
