My iPod charges but doesn't say is charging.

My ipod charges but doesn't say it's charging. It charges very slowly. However, sometimes (very rarely) it recognizes that is being charged and then it charges at a normal speed.

Same issue when connected to a dock, computer or usb of a car radio. Doesn't seem to be the cable since it works with other devices and several cables have been tried.

Any thoughts? Could this be because of the 30 pin connector or a major hardware issue?

Options

Joel that could be caused by your dock connector. If it is a major issue, you need to take check it for any bend, corroded or broken pins. If it looks okay than you need to consider having it re-soldered or exchanged. Not an easy task and requires some good skills, tools and practice.
