iMac late 2009 21.5inch combined sizes ram upgrade
Can I run two slots 4GB and two 2GB or do both rows need to be the same size?

Yes you can, as long as they're paired speeds.

You also want to keep the same sized modules in the same bank (Bank0 & Bank1). Bank0 is the top most slots (Left & Right) when you have the display facing up. I place the system down on a stack of books so the foot drops down.
Thank you for your responses, very helpful. I have the row arrangement correct but your comment re speed maybe the issue. Original RAM is 1067Mhz, new is 1066. Can 1Mhz difference be my problem!? Maybe.
