Bypassing Firmware password after 2010 RAM swap trick

We bought a pretty stout MBP(i7, 8g ram) from a local deals website. At first we got a folder with ? error until we tried to boot into recovery mode where we got the Firmware password prompt. A few services online offer to do it for a fee, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how we could do it ourselves. Were a fairly competent repair shop, and I've read a little bit about flashing the logic board, but there isn't much out there. Has anyone here successfully flashed a logic boards bios?

Answer this question I have this problem too

What message or image are you getting on the screen?

No message, just a padlock image with a field for entering a password and an arrow to the right.

Change the RAM configuration. On the first reboot Zap the PRAM.

The Macbook is a 2012, from what I understand the trick no longer works after 2010 models. Either way I've tried this and it wont respond to the PRAM reset.
