Something blew while diagnosing power supply ...help!

I opened up my iMac to diagnose whether I need to replace the power supply. I plugged it in to find the LED lights. When I pushed the power on button something blew on the power supply board. Will I have the same problem when I replace it? It smelled like something burned. I need to get my Mac up & running again. HELP!

I have an iMac A1224 emc 2133 2.4

I'm level 1 repair barely. How & what do I check for shorts? There's no room in there. I had to have my husbands help to get a bad hard drive out & get it back in. All the videos make it look so easy, but it isn't. My son has a friend who knows PCs, don't know if he'd know what to do with a Mac. Or if he can get over his false PC superiority. I'm always telling them PC stands for piece of crap.

you may need to replace your PSU

you can just replace few components but it's gonna be hard + it's Easy Level 3 repair

check whatever there are some fuses or blown traces or smth suspicious....

post some pictures what you found

you could replace your PSU but i won't guarante that it dosen't blow the $@$* out of it again...

i would preffer that we check what blow and why becouse if we have short circuit that that's gonna ruin your day

Level 3 means resoldering stuff on PCB (there are lvl 3 cases that an idiot who knows how to solder can do)

i think he can do it ! just belive in people, look i'm 18 and i know few thinks (i do that stuff since 12 or so...) but hey they need to learn even if they break stuff

to check shorts you need multimeter on contiunity setting (beeps) .....

i don't think you understand even 1/2 what i say so just

and spotting visual damages isn't hard if something is blown up you'll notice

What tools do. Need to track down a short? Soldering is easy, but in this case it's very tiny components. I check for shorts, but aren't there tools to help?

by

you can't check shorts with your finger xd

you'll need multimeter on continuity setting (just watch tutorian on multimeter)

track down? it's hard and gets expencive

first of all check for blown and dead stuff...and post fotos if you find anything

then get your dmm (digital multimeter) and while unplug look for the voltage lines like 5v;3.3v;12v(i don't know every single psu and what woltages it has...if you have problems i can post little video what i mean ) and gnd check them all and if you get a really low reading (or/and beep) than let us know

if you get any short don't power it on

if nothing try to power it on and check what happends?

after it's powered on check the voltages (black to gnd and ret to voltage line ) do it carefully so you don't get a zap

there may be tools but i don't know any

and check fuses for continuity whatever the aren't blown

do all the things with psu cable attached to the board and not attached to check if there is a short where it is on the main pcb or on the psu

let's hope you'r psu is dead and not anything so it'll be cheaper to replace (if it smells burned something is dead anyway )

oh you'r really nice to me right now ?

if something blow on the main PCB than PSU seplacement won't help,

and i did say that PSU replacement may help but it's not 100% sure

i don't care if you can help so i'm letting this thread to you

I don't recall not being nice. But when you use so many abbreviations & broken English it's hard to understand anything you are saying. It doesn't mean I'm stupid, it means you're being arrogant. It's a problem too many tech people have. Kind of like comic book guy on the Simpsons.

I'm just buying an Apple repair manual that they use for training, because visual will be easier for me. I was told the diagnostic wouldn't be worth it because Apple parts are too expensive. I don't care if it's a part from Apple, just so it's compatible.
