Can you explain why you need these measures. Apple doesn't offer the info and I don't know of anyone who has scanned them to reverse engineer them.

If you need a replacement key cap I would recommend you check here: TheBookYard - MacBook Pro Key Caps

I would recommend you order the parts from The Book Yard (see link above) so you can modify them for your use.

The other option here is to cast the part using Clear Polyester Casting Resin. Carefully place some tape in such a way you can break the cast after it is hardened. Don't forget to spray the part with release. Once you have a casting you should be able to modify the casting to meet your needs. Then cast the part using the hollowed out cast of the part.

how would you go about making resin keycaps for a macook?

@Nat Brown - Somethings you just need to give it ago!

Frankly when I wrote this 3D printing was still expensive and not easy to find. Today there are a lot of options! Here's one persons work Assignment 10: "Creating New Industries" - Apple Keyboard Keycaps

I would go with that approach as being easier and if you have a MakersLab near you they can help you and you can use their gear! I've done that a few times.

Even UPS now offers it as a service! 3D Printing

But just ordering the part as I originally stated is the simplest and quickest way!

Mmm... That would be cool! Sadly, I don't think you could do it as the key caps are very thin, wood would not work very well here as it would likely fracture after a few uses. Unlike a stand alone keyboard you also have a height issue when the lid is closed which prevents you from making them thicker.

He might be able to glue a THIN LAYER of wood, I am not sure if this is called VENEER in english, on top of the keys.

The pieces for each key could be cut out of a single sheet of veneer with a LASER CUTTER, which could also burn the corresponing letters, numbers, ... on these pieces of veneer.

As he will have to glue the wood to the keys anyway, he might also use 2 sheets of veneer in different colors and cut out letters, numbers, ... from one sheet and put them into the corresponding holes in the pieces from the other sheet.

As he might have to GRIND the surface of the keys to avoid contact with the display, I suggest using a replacement keyboard which could be bought for less than $30 at eBay ( http://www.ebay.at/itm/301720172145 )

After gluing the pieces of wood on top of the keys, he also needs to PAINT them with a clear finish for protecting them from sweat and fat from the fingertips !
