What's the best way to keep track of parts

I can't find any comments about keeping track of all these screws and parts so you know what goes where when something is reassembled. Seems like ideas about this should be at the front of each guide, or the home page.

I use iFix it magnetic project mat. I place the screws in a square as I follow the steps on the guide, it also comes with a pen to label them just incase you want to add more detail. I also place the screws in the square in accordance of where the screw came out of. for example, a small plate has 3 screws one on top and one in the middle and one in the bottom, I place the top screw towards the top of the square and the middle screw in the middle of the square and the bottom screw towards the bottom of the square. Hope this helps.
