MacBook not charging despite claiming it is!

Hello everyone,

Two days ago my A1278's (mid 2012) battery died (service battery warning). No big deal, I took it in to the Apple Store this morning and had it replaced (would have done it myself, but I need the computer for December).

However, this new battery is not charging whatsoever. Sometimes when I plug in the cord it claims it's not charging, other times it claims it's charging but the percentage does not change, and other times the LED turns orange but the laptop does not even recognize that the charger is plugged in. The computer works and the battery itself is holding a charge that diminishes each time I unplug it briefly (leading me to further conclude it's not charging when it says it is). The battery condition is stated as Normal.

I know it's not a charger problem, as I tried two different chargers out with the same result. I doubt it's a faulty battery, because I just had it replaced and CoconutBattery is telling me everything's alright. I tried resetting the SRC and PRAM to no avail. I'd also like to mention that the laptop is not liquid damaged or anything.

What's going on here? Could it be a misinstalled battery on Apple's part? Or, is it the charger port that's wonky, or could it even be something like the logic board? Has anyone else encountered this issue? I feel like an idiot blowing $170 on a new battery only to find out that something else is at fault here.

You should bring it back to be re-repaired under their warranty! Apple messed up here let them fix it for free.

Yep, I paid the Apple Store premium under the assumption I'd get to use my laptop during finals season rather than keeping it as a paperweight until a new battery shipped.

Dan is correct about it being under warranty. What I'm afraid of is them telling you it needs a new logic board. Call and tell them it's not working but that you will bring it in after finals so it is on the record.

@ Mayer - Apple will eat it as they let it pass their internal inspection without being discovered. But the clock is ticking! I wouldn't waste more than a week once I picked it up otherwise things could get confused needlessly.

Thanks to both of you. I'm taking it in tomorrow. I'm hoping they'll eat the cost of repairing the device for real, or at the very least issue a refund because they misdiagnosed my device. I guess all I can do now is be ridiculously polite to whoever helps me out.

Smile and if you must give a good cry with a stream of tears ;-} What ever you do don't get angry! Ask politely for the manager if they give you a hard time. And push it up the food chain if that fails. Apple will give in.
