Why is my computer not charging?

My computer stopped charging a couple of weeks ago. At first, the charger broke and it was fine charging it with another. So I got another from a friend, but then suddenly that didn't work it either. Some three weeks later the battery had swollen to twice the size and so I removed it and bought a new one. Now my computer can start up just fine but the charging still doesn't work. What could be wrong or how can I find out what's wrong? I'm eager to replace the broken stuff myself, but since I don't know for sure what's wrong I'm afraid I might either spend too much money on it or just screw up.

Thanks.

Ouch! Sounds like the charging logic on the main logic board is damaged. Most likely you had a cascaded failure here: The charger went and it burnt the logic board which caused the battery to over charge.

Repairing logic boards is quite advanced! I would recommend bringing your system in to someone who can repair the logic board as the first option.

The second option here is just replace the logic board which you can do. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Logic Board Replacement. Sadly this is the more expensive path.

Dan, do you really think the charging issue had anything to do with the battery swelling or just coincidence? This is a question, not a comment.

@Mayer - What I've seen in similar events is a damaged MagSafe cord shorts out the SMC middle pin damaging the logic board, so then the feedback circuit to the charger does not work correctly so the charger over charges the battery which is why the battery swelled.
