New hard drive doesn't show up in disk utility?

A couple of days ago, my hard drive, stopped working (flashing question mark). I bought a new 1tb sshd from Seagate, and have tried to boot using this, and a memory stick i have with os x yosemite, this does not work. The new drive doesn't show up in disk utility once i boot on the memory stick. Anyone know wether it's the sata cable, the firmware, or anything else that causes the problem, and a solution?

Thank you :)

This series had a lot of problems with the SATA cable, I would start there.

This is such a common problem IFIXIT has a special guide just for it: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement. Here is the cable you need: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable.

After you order the part you can also check the systems firmware following this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. Yosemite & El Capitan both upgrade the firmware so it might be newer than what Apple has listed here.
