ps2 text and textures not working

My PlayStation two wasnt used for roughly four or five years...recently I found it and got it all set up games and everything...but when I turn it on the textures for the main menu are strange...also were there should be normal text it shows a line of text that makes no sense...when I loaded up gta vice city the game worked fine except for the goicjong textures...once I got to the actual gameplay part it was working just fine...except for all of the textures rapidly flashing and sometimes showing coding...any help would be awsome
