Can I add Samsung EVO 850 Pro to MBP using existing cables

I have just bought a MacBook Pro, Model 1278. I had it upgraded to an i7 processor. I would like to upgrade it further to a Samsung EVO 850 Pro 512GB SSD. The SSD uses a SATA III connector, i'm not too sure what the MBP has for a SATA cable.

Can this be done and is there a penalty that will be paid by using this drive? What would i have to do to use this SSD in the Hard Drive position and use the HD as an external drive?

SATA III is backwards compatible with SATA II, which is compatible with SATA I, although I'm pretty sure the 2012 model uses SATA III so your SSD should install with no problems.

I think to use your old HDD as an external HDD, you've got to use a caddy and a USB to SATA cable.

I've already seen three of this brand and model number that have failed. Spend just a little more for a higher quality SSDS. And yes, it will work in this machine.

The hard drive tables fail in this model so if you were getting beachballs, beware.

Very true. The old models (non-EVO) are much more reliable.
