Plays only out 1 speaker, but headphone jack is not the problem.
I purchased this ipod on ebay and it works perfectly, except it would only play through one channel. If I pull the headphone plug out slightly, it will play through both speakers.
I have fixed a fair amount of headphone jack problems, so I ordered a new hp jack and installed it. The problem is still the same, even with the new jack. I even took a jack out of another ipod I knew for sure functioned, and still it's the same! It seems odd because if it were a problem with the motherboard/ribbon wire clip, then pulling the plug out slightly might not make a difference in the speaker channels. Then again, I'm not sure. The ipod doesn't look like it's been opened before I received it.
I can only conclude that the motherboard or the ribbon wire clip connections are bad. Has anyone else been equally perplexed by this problem, or have any advice on how to fix it?
Is this a good question?

I have a fifth generation that is doing the same thing. I just replaced the headphone jack and it is still doing this. I had to put a disk drive in. The plug was only a few bucks but I see new motherboards from $30 to $60.
Did you replace the motherboard and i works now?

Saame thing with my classic Ipod. I've noticed that if I apply pressure on the face of the device, just above the wheel, it plays out of both. Definitely not a headphone jack issue (I've tried many headphones). Just thought this new info might give some clues to someone else who's daring enough to open it up.

i don't want to replace the logic board, it's very expensive and i'm not sure if this will solve the problem.
