iMac cant pass apple logo on start up, what can I do?

Every time I try and start up my iMac will just stay on apple logo and progress bar reaches half way and stays there forever. I left out like that for three days... Still nothing can some one help me out

Did you do a system upgrade?

Try starting in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on startup.

Try holding down the Option & R key on start up and run Disk Utilities. That failing do a system reinstall from that same page.
