My engine will not start.

The engine will not turn over. It has a new battery and spark plug. When I remove the spark plug, the flywheel turns fine. Not sure what to do at this point.

What model is your mower and what model engine is it? It does not turn over with the spark plug in, but when you remove the spark plug it turns over? Has it worked with this plug before? Have you changed the plug for any reason? Have you checkd the length of the plug?

It is a 20 hp craftsman. I thought the battery was bad so I replaced that. Next step was the plug. I just noticed it will turn without the plug. Could it be fuel line or carburetor?

by

The plug may have been good i guess.

Just to verify. Will it turn over with the plug installed? Will it turn over when the plug is not installed?

by

It will not turn over with the plug installed.

Nathan Machacek it'll help if you can tell us what make and model your engine is. If it does turn over without the plug, but does not even turn over with the plug, it sounds like your plug is making contact with the piston. Check the length of the actual plug. Fuel line or carburetor will not prevent it from turning over. It may not start when those are the culprit, but it should at least turn over.

Length of the plug is the same as the old one. Thanks for your help. I may try to replace the starter. Could be weak?

by

if the starter is bad the extra compression can keep it from turning when theres no compression and its easy to turn the starter may have enough life to turn it

by

Nathan Machacek it goes back to does it turn over at all. Sure it could be your starter, bad ground etc. This will really all depend on what it does and what it sounds like when the plug is out. If it is slow and sluggish, then may be it's the starter etc.
