DVD drive recognized in Fedora 8, but wont read disks.

I am using Fedora 8 Linux on an old Solo 9300 Laptop. I want to reformat the hardrive and install Windows 2000 or XP. whenever I put the disk for Windows in the drive it will try and read it but it won't boot from the disk. I have my BIOS set to boot from DVD drive, then removable devices, then Harddrive. Is there anyway I can get it to boot either off the disk or is there some way I can boot off a USB drive?

Yes I have been able to read disks and no I am not trying use a machine specific disk. I had a restore disk but all it would load was Windows 98se. Not entirely useful on that system.

I've has a similar problem when trying to load Windows after Linux. The only solution I found was to remove the drive and format it on another computer. The drive was then recognized and I could load Windows. Gooe luck. Ralph

Sorry--misread your question. Have you ever been able to have your optical drive read a disk? Are you using a non machine specific disk?
