i am unable to bring up emails on my laptop

Sounds like the link is broken.
Using the Right click on the mouse go into Get Info for the desktop object. Look under the General twisty what does is Kind if it is an Alias you can toss it into the trash and then make a new one if you want to replace it or just use the mail application from the dock.
If this is an email message you could have a corrupted file or the mail application is not the default. Again look at the kind and tell us what it tells you.

I am assuming you are using the "Mail" app to load your emails. Maybe it's bugging out at the moment. What happens when you click it?
Have you also tried restarting the laptop?
