With black background, center of screen appears lighter after lcd assembly replacement

After repairing the broken lcd / digitizer on this phone, the center of the screen appears to be lighter when just a black background is on.

The owner said this wasn't an issue immediately, that it has developed.

I have not. I don't have an excess part for that at the moment. Looking for some possible explanation, besides it being faulty.
