If I change out my hard drive will iOS already be installed?

APPLE MACBOOK Intel Core 2 Duo A1181

My MACBook stays on grey stern with apple logo. It was working fine unti I tried to update iTunes. I've tried several reboot solutions to no avail. When I brought it to the Apple Store I was told to old for them to work on but I should purchase a hard drive.

Options

Make sure the new drive is backward compatible to 1.5 GHz. The guide will have links to compatible drives: MacBook Core 2 Duo Hard Drive Replacement

It will not be formatted or have a system on it. Use your original system installation optical disk to do that.
