Is my phone toast?

Iphone 5 64GB. Phone is is excellent condition, kept in otter case. Not sure what happened to it, possible one of my kids could have dropped it. screen is black

Sleep button stopped working a couple of months ago. Now the screen is black but I can hear siri when touching home button, but not right away like there is a home button issue as well now. plugged into itunes and I am able to see everything so I backed it up. took it to a local repair shop and they tried 3 different screens and told me that the screen is not the problem and everything looks good inside but they are unable to do anything else. Apparently this guy only knew how to change screens. He advised me to get a new phone.

I would like to try and fix this phone if possible. I know I need sleep/power button first but I am unsure what other parts to buy before I take it apart.

Also I found out entering the serial number of this phone on apples web site that it was part of a defective sleep button and they would fix it for free with 3 years of the first sale of this phone, which ended about a month ago!

Hmm that is skeptical. You'd think a simple display assembly would fix this issue. On the rare outside possibility, you can send it to Jessa Jones for, I'm guessing, a LCD socket replacement. You could also try and bring it to Apple, and see if they're generous, not likely, with you only being one month out of warranty

EDIT: Oh, yeah. There is a possibility it just needs a force restart. But you'd need your power button in working condition .. So there's that...

I just plugged it into the power cord for the heck of it after being at the shop for two days. The battery low/plug in cord symbol is flashing on the screen now for 40 min that i had it plugged in. That is more than it would do before, but there must still be some problem.

Well at least you've got visibility now. Let it charge and see what happens. I'll check back here in the am

Phone powered up once I connected an apple charging cord, had an aftermarket connected at first and it would not charge.

Still not sure what caused this problem but I am going to take it to apple today and see if they will still fix the sleep button for me as its only a month out of warranty. Home button is working fine now also.
