Disk drive only playing games that came out in 2010 or earlier?

My xbox that I have just bought second hand refuses to play any "modern" games and just says "disk unreadable" when i try to start the games up, but if i put in any games that came out in 2010 or earlier it seems (Black Ops, Guitar Hero 3, etc...), it plays no problem. Everything else works fine, just this. I have reformatted the disk drive and updated the xbox through xbox live. I would rather try to get this fixed rather than send it back, but if there is no other solution, then I will have to.

Thanks :)

Answer this question I have this problem too

I'm guessing the DVD drive is faulty. The lens could be dirty, out of proper alignment, or the pot switch may need to be recalibrated inside the DVD drive so the proper amount of voltage gets to the laser diode.

I do know that there were two formats of Xbox DVDs, "XGD2" and 'XGD3", the latter being newer and offering slightly more storage space on the optical disc.

Your disc drive might have no trouble reading your pre-2010 games, but has no idea what it's looking at when an XGD3 disc is inserted. Think of it as the lens being "out of focus" for the newer, denser discs.

This is all a theory of mine, based on some cursory researching on Xbox hardware and actually a similar problem I had with the PlayStation 2 reading DVD games perfectly, but always a read error with blue discs. It's an educated guess!
