My screen just shows the apple sign?

My MacBook Pro will turn on but then the only thing that will show up is the apple sign, then a folder, then a circle with a line through it!

Your machine can not find a startup folder. The system folder may be corrupted or your hard drive may have failed. Try starting from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and starting holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu and to Utilities - Disk Utility and run repair on the drive. If successful, back up your drive ASAP.
