exchanging hard drives between computers

I was told I could switch hard drives between a MacBook Pro 15" about 3 yrs old and a macbook 13" about the same age.

Options

The drives use the same interface, so you can install the drive in the new MacBook. However, the version of OS X may not be compatible and you will have to reload a version of OS X that is compatible with the new MacBook Pro.
