Could it be that the software is not at specification with the E-book and it's making it run slower. Or could it be that I need to upgrade some hardware in the machine.

You need to make sure that you read the specifications of the software to meet the requirements for the device that you are installing it. If the software is working be running slow on the device your just meeting the minimal requirements for the software to run. So you might and to upgrade your memory card in the device so the software can run at its optimal performance.
