How do I copy or back up my macHD

I'm going to replace my old 250 GB HD with a new 1TB HD. I need to copy or back up my old or current HD. I have an external drive, a Seagate 1TB HD. What do I need to do to move all my data, files and operating system from current HD to the external drive prior to removing the old drive and replacing it.

When you plug in the external, turn on time machine. Back up your current drive. Next install the new drive, boot the machine up and let it do an internet repair portion onto the hard drive. Now use Disk Utility to format the drive. Then do a restore from Time Machine Backup.

Cloning works but you not get a repair partition installed.
