GPS & Bluetooth work sporadically.

I have a 128GB iPhone 6, just out of warranty. Two days ago, the GPS signal and Bluetooth connections weakened. They still work, but GPS shows a cone of confusion about 100 feet wide, making navigation and fitness tracking impossible. Bluetooth works within about 3 feet, but any more than that, it cuts out.

My phone is 25 days out of warranty, and Apple and AT&T were not helpful. Anyone have an idea of what the issue could be? WiFi works fine, as do calls, and the phone in is near-mint condition. Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Thanks!

I have been experiencing this problem as well. iPhone 6 / 64GB / 2months out of warranty. Genius Bar at Apple Store provided no solution. GPS is unable to track my movement, rendering fitness tracking and turn by turn navigation impossible. However, it can pinpoint my location if I'm stationary. Bluetooth can connect and function, but only from 3-5 feet away--no further. WiFi will connect only when in same room with access point. Signal strength is very weak or nonexistent when iPhone is moved to adjacent room.

After first noticing WiFi issues, I assumed replacing the Wi-Fi Antenna ($19.95 on this site) would fix the problem. Based on the symptoms described above, it's not just the WiFi.

Is there a single part/component that is responsible for WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS signal strength? @tomchai, you seem to be hinting with steps 29 and 30 that the grounding bracket be malfunctioning or perhaps loose? Would this cause the issues I've described above?

Thank you all for your time.

by cyclonepatriot

I'm having the same issue as well. I get the "GPS cone of confusion" if I have a simple plastic case on my iPhone 6 (no metal parts in the case to cause interference).

With or without a case on, Bluetooth range is really short now. I used to be able to walk around my entire house and have my Apple Watch stay connected. Now, even half the length of my house causes the two devices to disconnect. The Bluetooth range problem is even more obvious when streaming music to a Bluetooth speaker.

(I'm out of warranty, so I don't think I'll bother taking it to the Genius Bar)

@pkennethv,

I am having the same issues. Did you finally found what the cause is?

by Vasileios

No, not yet. Hoping someone will read this post who's had a similar issue and knows of a fix.

Hi All,

Same issue here, iPhone 6 out of warranty, genius bar confirmed defective but I am not willing to pay for a replacement. Surely this can fixed by a replacement part?

Had the same issue. Wifi, bluetooth, Gps signals were very weak. Replace the WiFi Antenna Signal Flex Cable Ribbon for $7 and everything is back to normal!!! I've been searching for an answer for a while now but this little part does the job!!!!!

Installation was very easy as long as you follow the instructions on taking the logic board out!!

I can't find the same cable for that price here - is it the same one as:

The photo is slightly different, and the one listed for the iPhone 6 is $19.95, but both images show part T306S.

When you say you had the same issue, could you confirm what your GPS issue would be? I don't have any Bluetooth or wifi issues, just gps

by Z N

I really hope this can fix the same problem I've been having. Can you tell me where you got your replacement part? It cost twenty here.

How long did the repair take? I've changed batteries in an iPhone, but have never tinkered with a logic board before. Thanks!

Can anyone confirm changing this part worked? Also I've read that changing this part requires soldering so it is much more of an expert skilled job

by Z N

The installation is very simple.... Follow the guide to remove logic board and no soldering required!!! Basically I had issues with no gps or sometimes gps is way off... Wifi signal was very weak and I had to put my phone very close to a Bluetooth device for it to pair..... This is a cheap fix that if you are experiencing what I experienced before...

OH MY GOSH I CAN'T BELIEVE I FIXED IT!!!! I replaced the Wi-Fi antenna and the Wi-Fi signal and GPS are working again!!! If I can do this repair ANYONE can!!! I have NEVER done anything like this before but I did it!! I had to pray to God for patience about 100 times during the process because it is SUPER tedious and takes A LOT of patience but I really fixed it!!! Just follow the step by step instructions posted here and read all the comments for tips and be SURE to use a piece of paper to put all the parts & screws on. I taped them down lightly on the paper and marked each item with the step number. It made putting it back together much easier. My tip is get a GOOD Philips head screw driver because the one that came with my antenna was a piece of junk but once I switched to the good one my husband had, the job went so much faster!!! Thank you all so much everyone who contributed to this thread!! For about $12, I bought this part on Amazon with the tools and saved a BUNDLE of money since Apple wouldn't do anything for me being that the phone was 1 month out of warranty. It's totally worth the time it takes to do!!! Thanks again everyone!!!!! :)

by Tawfik Deifalla

You don't need to remove the battery. Only part you need to replace is the Flex Cable. Follow this guide to remove the motherboard. The wifi flex cable is located on the back of the motherboard. iPhone 6 Logic Board Replacement

by Jason

Tawfik I only replaced the WiFi Flex Cable. I used the "iPhone Logic Board Replacement" guide. It doesn't tell you specifically how to replace the Flex Cable but you will easily identify it and it snaps off and snaps on. I will tell you aligning it and snapping it back on takes A LOT of patience. My recommendation is to read all the comments in this thread for tips and hints, use the guide, make sure you have a good phillipshead screwdriver and do this repair only when you are not rushed for time and you are in a calm patient frame of mind.

by Garcia

IT WORKED :) Thanks for the amazing tips ..

I also had this WiFi + GPS issue. Replaced the Flex Cable. But it's still the same. Can it be the WiFi antenna itself? Shall I consider replacing it?

I have an even simpler answer that worked for me!

My problem was the F-cable as well. But I solved it without replacing the F-cable at all. Replacing the F-cable absolutely would have worked, but wasn't necessary.

When I opened up my iPhone 6, I could see part of the F-cable showing through near the top of the phone just left of center. I noticed that there's a small brass/bronze sticker on the F-cable. You can see that rectangular sticker in pictures of the F-cable on the web.

In my case, that sticker had shifted and was no longer covering the brass area underneath fully. I carefully lifted the sticker with the small plastic tool I used to separate the screen from the backing and reseated the sticker. Voila! Full signal and GPS again.

Beauty of this fix is all you need to do is remove the two pentalope screws, suction the glass up, then reseat the sticker. If your sticker is unseated, you don't need to unscrew anything on the inside. Reapply it in the right spot, and close it back up. 5 minute fix.

I suspect this is actually the problem most folks are having because it is hard to see how that cable fails or the connectors fail. But because the sticker seems to sandwich between the top plate and the F-cable, if you drop the phone you can see how the sticker might get pushed out of position. Clearly replacing the F-cable will solve the problem of the sticker having shifted, but if the only problem is the sticker shifted you can save yourself a ton of time and the cost of the cable by simply reseating the sticker.

Hope this helps!

Replacing the flex cable cured my problem with inaccurate gps.

It turned out that the original f cable had one of it's connectors loose. This may have been the issue but I replaced it anyway and all is working

by Z N

You may be on to something. I still have my old (malfunctioning) flex antenna (The "F" shaped one) and I do notice that the sticker looks sloppily positioned, like it is coming off. If I ever have the same problem in the future I'm going to try just repositioning the sticker first. Thanks!

by Matt C

I bought new flexcable and replaced. No effect. I bought the antenna and replaced. No effect. After a few weeks I open my whole phone again to see if there is any lose connection, but nothing as such. The strange thing is that I received the same amount of signals if I completely remove the antenna. Another thing I noticed is that my wifi works perfectly well when it's connected to a router at 5 GHz band. Only at 2.4 GHz it's working in 3-4 meters. Anybody any idea?

Another victim here. 14 month old iPhone6. I was at the gym listening to music on bluetooth headphones, the phone was resting on the machine, and suddenly after 20 minutes the bluetooth started cutting out more than 3 or 4 feet away. Next day I noticed my GPS was not working. Then I also noticed WiFi was weak. Took it to Apple Genius bar, they confirmed the problems, and wanted me to pay $300 to swap the phone. My phone has been in a rubbery silicone case since new and well taken care of, so it's not abuse that causes this problem.

I've bought 8 iPhones, 3 iPads, 4 iPod touch, 2 iPod Classic 160GB (first one mysteriously stopped working after 3 years), 1 AppleTV and 700 shares of AAPL stock over the years. I can't believe they wanted $300 to fix something this common and known problem. Not nice Apple!

Phew... I did this repair tonight, and it worked. Everything is back to normal; my GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi are all working like new again. The flex antenna was indeed the cure, but I could not find anything visually wrong with it - it looks perfect, no apparent damage.

Thank you to IFIXIT, to @gatorflyer, @tomchai and all the contributors on this thread who gave me the confidence to do this; my first ever iPhone repair.

I followed the recommended guide carefully, it is an excellent guide. One thing I recommend is before starting get a sheet of paper and draw 2" by 2" squares on it, number each square with the steps in the guide, and the size and quantity of screws you take out in each step. Then as you proceed through the guide place those screws you remove in the marked squares so you will be able to put all the screws back exactly where they came from. Also, be sure to get the tools recommended, this repair would be impossible without them.

A word of caution: this is a tedious job; the screws are super tiny, the cables are difficult to fit back into their sockets, and you need a steady hand and a big dose of patience. The toughest part, by far, was putting on the new antenna - it has 4 little snap-in mounting points, and it is really, really hard to align and get it snapped in on the back of the logic board. That one step alone took me 15 minutes. Use a magnifier if you have one, and be sure not to drop any screws. I dropped one on my dark wood floor and it took me 10 minutes to find it.

Good luck to anyone who has this problem in the future. @AppleSupport - please fix this, you know it is a problem.

Very glad it worked for you. I was angry I'd have to spend $300 for a replacement phone when mine started having the problem.

I agree about organizing the screw size between steps... I didn't do that, and had to guess between the 1.3mm and 1.2mm screws a couple of times. When I replaced my battery last week, I marked the screw sizes in squares on the lid of the iFixIt kit - made reassembly much easier.

Kudos on your first fix!

by gatorflyer

Thanks for your tips! I really appreciate them! It made the process much easier! Followed the guide and my phone is back to working great!!

by Garcia

Yea another quick tip, put a piece of tape on each of those squares. Put the screws on the tape to make sure they don't fall and they remain in place. Its not worth dropping a screw.

My daughter's iPhone 6 had bad GPS signal ( would not work with maps), weak and unreliable bluetooth, poor wifi signal. Her phone has been messed up for 2 months. I also replaced the Main Logic Board Antenna Flex Cable 2 days ago and all is restored back to normal. Bluetooth works great, GPS works again with maps, WiFi works great. The Logic Board Antenna Flex Cable is a 1 inch long ribbon cable that is F shaped and a picture of it appears earlier in this thread. I found it online for about $6 which included the shipping and an iPhone tool kit.

https://www.amazon.com/WELLENT%C2%AENEW-...

The logic board antenna flex cable is located on the back side of the main logic board so you have to completely remove the Main Logic Board which is a chore but doable. I used the instructions for removing the Main Logic Board that are also posted earlier in this thread. There are a number of tiny screws of multiple sizes and so some organization of the screws is useful. I used the following hint: Take a blank sheet of printer paper and tape it to the countertop (so it will not slide around and mix up your screws) Draw a 1-2 in square box for each of the steps involving screw removal. In each box draw a circle in the position of each screw location for that step and put each screw in the appropriate location when removed. I also labled each box with the step number and the number of screws for that step. The steps are in the instructions earlier in this thread for removal of the Main Logic Board.

iPhone 6 Logic Board Replacement

Once the logic board is removed, turn it over and pop off the 4 connectors on the F shaped Main Logic Board Antenna Flex Cable and snap on the 4 connectors on the new flex cable to install on the board. Follow the steps in reverse order to reassemble. It took me 2.5 hours to complete the job but I also replaced the touch screen/digitizer as well because the glass was cracked. I could have done it in about half the time if I did not replace the front screen. This is an inexpensive fix for this big problem.

I would like to add my success story to the list. For a while my bluetooth was weak, then abruptly it became too weak to function AND my GPS died too, which used to have no problems.

Long story short, replacing this antenna solved all of my problems!

I found this link and the possible solution of replacing the F-shaped "iPhone 6 Logic Board Antenna Flex Cable". After the Apple Store told me that "the part is not in stock" and instead they wanted to replace my phone for $300, I decided to try the self-fix route. ifixit seems to be out of stock for this part, but there are a number of internet places that will actually sell it for much cheaper. I went to one of those.

It is a pretty long disassemble and reassemble. Be careful. Be organized: I kept a sheet of paper with double-stick tape where I stuck the parts for each step of disassembly and wrote the step next to them. This was an INVALUABLE technique.

The first time I re-assembled my phone, a vertical stripe of the digitizer (touchscreen) didn't respond to my finger. I disassembled it again to the step where I unplugged the plugs that connect the screen to the main phone body, and carefully brushed the contacts of the plugs with isopropyl alcohol (with a free mascara brush from Sephora). After plugging it back together it works perfectly!

Now my Bluetooth is more solid and robust than it ever was! Great. Just have patience with the long disassembly / re-assembly. And be gentle with the connectors.

Insanely useful guide!

Have been experiencing issues with Bluetooth connection for a couple of months, my iPhone 6 wasn't able to establish a steady connection with bluetooth headphones once it was in the pocket (1-2 feet from the headphones was the critical distance the day before I saw this thread). Needless to say the GPS accuracy was decreasing exponentially.

Bumped into this thread yesterday night, ordered the Ribbon at the local shop, collected it first thing in the morning. Couple hours later everything was working unbelievably right. Replacing the Wi-Fi Antenna Flex Cable Ribbon was the best solution. The whole procedure took like 1,5 hours, pretty scary, the comments to the guide made the job much easier.

Would also like to say that this article is twice as useful for Russia, since the lack of the authorized service centers and complete unreliability of the existing ones (my friend got his iPhone stuffed completely with low-quality parts, had to buy a new iPhone in the end).

Many thanks to those people responsible for finding the solution :D

I'm having an issue after replacing the wifi ribbon. I powered my phone on and now my wifi logo is blue? I went through all the necessary steps and did the install flawlessly. Could it be that the ribbon antenna is different on the Verizon model from the At&T model and I got the wrong ribbon???

I've been reading about the iPhone 6 flex cable change, the wifi antenna, and other comments throughout the entire length of this thread and would like some additional insight.

My questions are these:

1. My Maps application is constantly in a state of "locating" and doesn't work. It can find me when I start, but it cannot do directions nor follow me. That tells me that the GPS isn't working.

2. I don't believe my Bluetooth is working, as my car cannot find my iPhone and vice-versa, and my Fitbit doesn't sync correctly....but I have to verify this after work.

3. Wifi seems to work fine. (at home and work)

Based on this being just an'apparent' GPS and Bluetooth issue, does that translate to the WiFi Antenna Signal Flex Cable Ribbon replacement AND the Wifi Antenna? OR just one or the other? Neither? Other? :)

I guess I don't want to replace both unless I have to, but if there is any guidance that would be helpful.

I have the iPhone 6 and have done a couple replacements on my own already (replaced the power button flex cable and also the back camera.)

Both of these were pretty straight forward.

Hello.

Finally today arrive the piece for replacing and did it.

Unfortunately did not work. The problem is that the board was broken one of the 4 connectors. So even if I replace will not connect. So does not have reparation.

So I will send in eBay on parts the phone. Except the main board it think with that is completely useless...

After some very intricate tugging, prying, and squinting, I replaced the old faulty cable, with the new one (you can find cheaper ones than the one I linked, but I wanted to support iFixit on this one) and voila! GPS works fine, WiFi does not randomly drop, and my Bluetooth range/connectivity is flawless.

This should fix your issues if you are experiencing the same as the rest of us. I highly recommend everyone try this cheap fix first before giving up and spending even more money. Just be prepared for dropped screws and possible cursing, as this process takes patience.

You may not have snapped all of the connectors securely in place on the flex cable. The connectors are a little tricky. You have to disassemble the phone to check that. If you are going to disassemble the phone again to check the connectors on the flex cable, you might consider replacing the antenna module. I don't think it costs too much. Some people have had the antenna go bad.

Had the same problem and read this thread thoroughly, determining that I need to go to an iPhone repair shop and tell them it's probably the antenna that needs to be replaced. Guy didn't seem that optimistic that would do it but he said he would for $65 and if it didn't fix it, no charge. Works for me. Well, came back in a few hours and it WORKED! iPhone all fixed and pretty now, GPS and wifi working great without a hitch. Can't believe it. hello everyone. ive been dealing with no GPS poor bluetooth issue on my 1.5yr iphon6 for months but just recently started to address it. ive tried every type of reboot and iphone refresh to no avail. my GPS compass is working fine i think and the "geniuses" at apple store didn't see an issue with my phone. but obviously there was. Waze uber or any of the map apps couldn't not locate my exact location. and navigation was non existent. my Bluetooth was limited to 5-10ft from my soundbar while my backup iphone 4 had no problem locating my location or with Bluetooth range to 20-30ft. And its been frustrating to the point where i wanted to trade this crappy phone and upgrade to a new one. i think it started during some newer firmware upgrade and i am using 9.3.5 now. but cant prove it. HOWEVER what i recently did kinda fixed it. but i cant really replicate the issue and fix. what i did was connect my computer to my soundbar via bluetooth. and i dont know how or why but my phone is working normally now. extended bluetooth and normal GPS positioning. even outside of the house where their is no wifi. so idk how to describe it. but if you guys have similar issues where there might be some computer/soundbar/iphone miscommunication its worth a check. or i might just of done something else to fix it without knowing it. good luck i know its frustrating
