Why won't my Canon EOS Rebel XSI shutter not activate?

Recently, the shutter on my Canon EOS Rebel XSI will not activate. The focus lights flash when the button is pressed, but it never activates the shutter. I have fully-charged both batteries, and still no success. Is there a fix for this other than taking in it for repair?
