Cannot "re-boot" when I use the [Menu+Center button] combo to reset?

I have had this iPod for a while. I am willing to accept a position that repair may be untenable.

I can generally listen to an album (about forty-five minutes to an hour) after having it charged (what I presume would be fully) and then it will freeze up. Allow me to describe this aforementioned 'freezing' -- I click on a song or another album and it will skip through songs without playing them, the latent time between button presses becomes much more noticeable (something related to processing, potentially?).

Upon not being able to play the music, and skipping through the songs (as of its own will) I use the [Menu+center] reset and it continues to attempt to re-boot (the little apple continues to flash up, and then the screen goes blank, and then the apple comes back). After this iteration the screen goes completely blank and discontinues its efforts to re-boot. I wait a few minutes and turn it on and the battery is almost dead (with just a sliver of red remaining).

From this evidence - Is the problem related to a battery that is simply drying up due to the iterations of attempting to re-boot or is it something more internally complicated?

I reset to factory default and have loaded some music. It appears to be operating smoothly. Thanks for the help.

Have you had your ipod connected up to an iTunes installation, have you backed your music / video's up recently? if not do so now.

Do not back up the device itself, as the firmware corruption may transfer onto this back up.

The very first thing i would try is a factory defaults reset of the device. If you can plug it into iTunes the option to do this is located when you click the iPod in the devices section.

Restore it to factory defaults and then load your Music / Video's back onto the device by setting it up as a new iPod (instead of restoring from a back up of a previous one).

This may or may not work depending if this issue is software or hardware related.

The issue sounds like a logic board problem if it is a hardware problem.

Hi James, thanks for your response.

I am not sure what you mean by the iTunes installation comment? I believe that my iTunes is the most current version and my iPod also has whatever the most current software would be for a 5th generation (I finally did this about 3-4 mo. ago).

I can plug the device into iTunes, in fact it is plugged in right now. The device does operate after it iterates through the 'attempted re-boot cycle' several times it just seems that following this the battery has no charge left.

You are saying that a factory defaults reset may help this?

Hi, no, the factory defaults suggestion was just to iron out the possibility that the problem may be the firmware on the iPod. If this is not the case then yes i would go down the replacement battery route, but bear in mind that may not work, it could actually be a logic board problem.
