Why is my laptop not continuing to open but stays repeating

My laptop turns on the says:

Checking media (fail)

Checking media

Then after that it just says:

No bootable device -- please restart system

I have turned it on and off a couple of times and it still repeats those steps

allanaelbitar sounds like your harddrive has failed. Try to access you BIOS and set the Optical drive or the USB to bootable device. Then use a bootable CD (i.e. Puppy Linux) or a bootable USB and see if you can now access your computer. Ultimately it sounds like you will need a new drive.
