First look carefully at the connectors contacts compare them to a good socket is there anything damaged? If the socket is damaged it will require someone with the skills to replace the socket or replace the logic board.

Next try plugging in a powered USB hub into the bad USB port and then plug a USB device into the hub. Are you able to access the device? If you can then you might have just burn't the power fuse link which is less costly than replacing the whole logic board.

There are a few dock devices you can use that connect to your Thunderbolt port as an alternative method.

If the USB port is physically broken then the only way to fix it is to replace the entire logic board. Pretty pricey. Thunderbolt can be many things. You could get a Thunderbolt to USB 3.0 adapter. http://www.amazon.com/Kanex-KTU10-Thunde... Kanex makes good stuff.

That is not entirely true. Skilled / authorized repair agents can replace the usb ports on your logic board.

Given that this is a 2011 and can be placed under warranty by simply contacting Apple... OR they can take it to a repair agent since it is likely out of warrant... they can simply de solder the port... and replace it with a new one. Honestly, it's a VERY simple repair if you've ever soldered anything ...ever, and have basic knowledge of the logic board.

Brandon, you may want to check on placing it under warranty once the original has expired. Even the AppleCare only adds two years.
