There is a very faint dark line (seemingly random) on my screen

I have a seemingly random looking, diagonal, line on my screen. It is only visible with colors like (dark) grey and blue. Black is too dark (it won't show) and white (or other light colors) won't show the line either.

Block Image

I made a photo of the line, and in the photo it is not too visible, but you can see it. In real life it is not much more visible either, but since it is there, I want to know if I can expect other problems, or if I can fix it.

Thanks for your help

Can you give us some history of this system, was it serviced before?

Looks like a single line without any pattern, I would exclude the moiré line. Looks more like a bad LCD to me.

The iMac has been rarely moved. Primarily used in an office. Never upgraded or opened the iMac.

It is indeed a single line without a pattern. Moire line seems more of a pattern to me indeed

by

yup, it has to be a pattern to be Moiré lines. My money is on a bad LCD :-) Not sure how much this line bothers you, but I'd continue using your system the way it is and postpone any repair for now.

Chosen Solution

What you are seeing are Moire lines converging. The cause is the intersection or the warping of the light signals. In some cases signal leakage can also cause this.

Often moisture gets between the cover glass and the LCD panel or the LDVS cable is bad. In your case I suspect the cable is bad.

Update (10/17/2015)

Looking at your image again Old Turkey I think is right! You have a bad LCD.

It is a single line, without a pattern. Moire lines seem to have some pattern.

So what does bad LCD mean in terms of the future. Is it still good for a while?

by

realistically you should check the connections first, but it should last for some time, I would recommend a replacement if necessary as soon as possible though

by

@Megmgmn - The issue is a defect within the screen its self. While the screen has damage its more of a distraction here.
