Buying an iPhone 5s with unresponsive touch screen

Hi, I was planning to buy an used iphone 5s with a broken screen.

The iphone seems fine (no visibile damage) but the owner claim the the touchscreen doesn't work, see picture ---> http://postimg.org/image/uabg5uxer/

My concern were:

-what could the cause be? it would be fine if i could only replace the touchscreen but i was wondering if it may be something more expensive (the selling price is quite low)

-how could i check if the iphone is stolen or being iCloud-locked, without accessing the springboard? (since the touchscreen is not working until I fix it)

about the icloud check - you should be able to get the IMEI/MEID information on the back of the phone and then could enter in here https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/. That will check the status.

Can't say for sure if replacing the screen would solve the problem but that's been the solution for me when I've fixed non responsive screens.

If you're going to be in the game of buying craigslist phones, fixing them, and I'm guessing re-selling them. You should have an arsenal of spare parts. So you can check, if a screen is untestable, you should test it. A $100 investment, could quickly turn into a $100 headache/paperweight. As far as the causes. Could be lots of things. Damage to the digitizer, damage to the cable. Possibly even damage to the digitizer socket connector. The problems? You could have iCloud lock, Apple ID lock, bad esn, possibly even error 53. Fonebitz made a good suggestion as to how to check, and I would use their suggestion, as to parts. Using third party parts, will usually give you third party problems

From what it looks like you will need to replace the screen, its very common for iPhone 5S Screens to have lines going down the screen when the touch screen connector isn't making contact, so a simple screen replacement will do the trick.

In regards to the iCloud, get the IMEI and run a blacklist check here on the device, that way you can tell all its details including if it is locked or blacklisted

Best of luck !!!
