cant download or apply ringtones. apps stop responding everytime

I can no longer put ringtones on my phone. Have tried several different ringtone apps. Every time I try the app stops responding. What's the point of having a cell phone if you have to keep notifications on silent to keep from hearing generic ringtone (awful) play continually until I figure out what triggered the notice. (IE, Email, text, missed call etc) PLEASE HELP IVE RESEARCHED FOR WEEKS AND CANT FIND A SOLUTION.
