How frequently do we see problems with the Power and Sensor Cable?

I recently did some simple repairs on my iPhone, was careful to not displace any components when disassembling and reassembling, but the power button no longer works. I have been told I need to replace the Power and Sensor Cable. I am simply shocked that I have run into this problem after being so meticulous. Has anyone else seen this sort of thing happen? What causes the cable to go?
